Sandro Chia

Sandro Chia is considered a prominent figure in the Transavanguardia, the Italian Neo-Expressionist movement that emerged in the late 1970s in opposition to Conceptual Art. Chia’s paintings and sculptures are characteristic for the movement, marked by a return to figuration and symbolism.

In “Les Jumeaux” (1989), a sculpture the artist made during the time he was living in New York, references to the geometric abstraction of cubism and futurism are visible - the visual language of early modernism being an important trove from which Chia lends in his figurative work.
